I remember the first time I had to complete an Annual Product Review.
Rewind 15+ years ago.
It all started as a half day briefing session with a 100-page PowerPoint template and a supporting Word document of the equivalent with instructions. I recall feeling so overwhelmed as I left that briefing. I have always wanted to do well by the products I manage, and customers and I left that room thinking oh wow how am I going to do this….and do my day job.
We had 4 weeks, and we were presenting the results and outcomes to the Group Managing Director of a large Australian Telco that would take an entire day and everyone was going to get on the same page and find golden opportunities and areas that needed redemption or who knows what!
Over the next month countless hours, late nights, weekends were poured into the Annual Product Review with the outcome providing us with a comprehensive lay of the land for our products performance, roadmap, risks, insights, compliance, and a plethora of opportunities.
Following the success of the outcomes of the first annual product review, this process not only continued but shorter reviews were scheduled every 90 days. The process was arduous to say the least, with dozens of excel sheets, data, documents, emails, and preparation needed. Every quarter we would be looking for the last review and trying to update it. Everyone tried to save to a common drive, but it never worked, sometimes versions were saved over with new versions meaning we lost older historical documents and outcomes and so on. It was a bit of a logistical nightmare. People went on leave and left and there was never a complete history or audit trail for new product managers or to have available the data you need when issues arise and you need to find that information from 2 years ago! This problem still exists today.
Now, let's park that for a moment.
On the flip side, the actual outcomes of the quarterly and the annual product reviews came with plenty of rewards. The process compels you as a Product Manager to get out of the fire fighting and business as usual activities that take up a lot of our time. The review process taps into your strategic skills to deep dive into your product, the customer, the market, the competition and as a result amongst that process your risks, threats, and opportunities arise.
I can only say that despite the pain of the process of all my Product Reviews of the past the outcomes have been amazing. I can unequivocally say that in all my reviews, there was always opportunities for growth, customer experience, risk avoidance and most of all innovation unpacked. Our biggest opportunity believe it or not delivered a growth opportunity of $20M in less than 6 months when we uncovered a brilliant insight around our data metrics during an annual product review.
The best part is that you cannot underestimate what can be uncovered, at times there may be plenty of small wins but there will also be the crème de la crème that will come shining through during a review. The great part is that you will generate a picking list of low hanging fruit that you can then prioritise opportunities subject to your validation activities and complexity to execute.
Fast forward to today.
